HistoryFamily HistoryNaina comes from a middle class Indian family. Her father?s side is from Kolkata, whilst her mother?s side of the family is from Dhaka. Before the partition, this was one country. Arranged marriages were incredibly popular and practiced during that time. Families would place advertisements in the newspaper, or relatives would find suitable partners. The family found each other via ads in the newspaper set by her mother?s father. The two families met twice before the engagement ceremony was planned. The first time was a customary, traditional tea meeting. The second was a dinner, in which the full extended families met in the groom?s house. The bride and the groom talked for the first time after their wedding, during their honeymoon, in a local tea plantation.
Deep, her father was an academic. His passion was literature, although he had a PhD in chemical engineering. Literature and other forms of art were not considered as ?occupations? during that time (even now, really) and were looked down upon. People become doctors or engineers to gain respect in society. Of course, reputation was everything in Indian society. He was a professor in a local private university, and spent his free time reading Tagore?s works. He had nearly the entire works of the artist memorized.
Jaya, her mother was a housewife. She was a high school graduate and was never asked or given the opportunity for further education. She was brought up in a strict patriarchal society, and was raised to always listen to elders. She had internalized the idea that men were superior to women, and did not question it. She had little to no voice in the household. The only place that was entirely her own was the kitchen, in which she had utter control over. Cooking was her life, her passion, and also her identity.
Due to the severe difference in education levels, Naina?s parents were never in love, if at all. They had adapted to a mutual give and take relationship. Deep was the supreme financial provider whilst Jaya was like his wife ? cooking, cleaning, and taking care of him. And of course, she was the mother of his four children.
Also, the couple had a huge age difference of 10 years. These only caused further lack of communication and understanding. Growing up, Naina had never seen couples in love. She wasn?t sure if she believed it at all. She saw marriage like a business agreement.
Her three siblings were her source of happiness, even though the family itself was not very happy. The girls, Esha and her were always given second treatment. They went to cheaper schools, and were expected to be good housewives when they grew up. Fortunately, they were allowed the option of further education.
Esha complied to her parents wishes. She finished her undergraduate studies, and married a man her parents chose. She moved to New Delhi and was now starting a family.
Her older brother Rahul moved to Canada for his undergraduate studies. He continued and got a graduate degree there.
Nikhil is currently somewhere in the UK for his undergraduate studies.
Individual History Naina watched her sister?s life from afar and realized she couldn?t possibly be happy living that life. Although she was naturally smart, Naina never believed it. She was never given that support and encouragement from her family, and continues to doubt herself even today. Nevertheless, her hard work and brains paid off, and she was able to secure half a scholarship in University College London. Her father was not too happy about it, and would rather have her study in India where it was cheaper. However, after all Naina?s begging, he finally agreed to pay for the other half of her tuition. Besides, it was a chance to brag to his collogues ? ?Oh, that?s right. My daughter studies in London.?
Naina could not have been happier. She had just bought her freedom. She could finally fly out of her cage, do as she pleased, and more importantly, was very far away from her parents and the Indian society she both loved and despised.
After one and a half years in university (she was majoring in Biology and Human physiology), she met Vikrant Kapoor. He was two years older, and was so entirely different from all the males she had met. He was charismatic, he was respectful, he was smart, and he was funny. He was also a pureblood.
Later she would find out that he wasn?t in her university at all, but was actually a pureblood working in the Ministry of Magic. They began dating, and after a year, he told her about the world or Magic. He told her about Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, and the world that was completely hidden from muggles.
When he proposed, she accepted.
Her family didn?t. They were deeply upset and furious and haven?t spoken to her since (it?s been three years now). Her father stopped paying for her tuition.
Already incredibly captivated with the Magical world, Naina decided to pursue becoming a Healer ? the magic equivalent of a doctor. With the help of Vikrant, and his incredibly rich family, Naina received intense training in Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Herbology and Defense Against the Dark Arts. She took the N.E.W.T.s at Hogwarts, even though she was never a student there. She got Exceeding Expectations in all the subjects, and got Outstanding for Potions and D.A.D.A. She now begins her training for being a Healer in St. Mungo?s.
For a year, the couple is incredibly happy. They live in a huge penthouse (a gift from her in-laws) on the 24th floor in Cobblestone Way. They wine and dine in Vita. They escape the busy city life for weekends in Hogsmeade and other sleepy towns. Despite being separated from her family (although she is sort of in touch with her siblings), Naina is satisfied and incredibly content.
However, after a year, Vikrant wants to start a family. Naina wants one too, but not now ? not at the peak of her career. Having children will be more of a hindrance, she realizes. Besides, she is far too young. Barely 23 years old! After months of disagreements, they mutually agree to file for divorce. Her relationship with her in-laws is decent, and although they are unhappy with the divorce, they want her to keep the huge penthouse. Naina?s measly training salary forces her to accept.
After a year, she becomes a certified Healer, and is finally financially stable. Although she now has an incredible career and beautiful house, Naina is empty. Sometimes it?s days before she has a real conversation. And during those times, she wonders if she did the right thing ? leaving her family, marrying Vikrant, divorcing him.
